Volunteering at St. Ann Center

Recently one of our volunteers was asked to describe what his experience at St. Ann Center is like.  Here is his response.

When I am asked about St. Ann Center, this is pretty much what I tell everyone ...
"Volunteering at the St. Ann Center is a blessing. My time here is spent building friendships in an atmosphere of growth, peace, and dignity. The best part is that I am getting to know persons of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities. Each time I'm here I am reminded that it is a privilege to be part of a care program in which the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of the individual are being met. This volunteer experience also has its challenges. The care program at the St. AnnCenter is client-centered, and that calls for volunteers who are ready to respond to clients' needs as they change--creativity and versatility are essential and appreciated, and make for a positive and exciting volunteer experience."  Benjamin Babb

"This Is My Friend"

One day a group of fourth graders came to St. Ann's to sing for the clients and staff. Typically we ask an adult and child to serve as greeters at the door. So we asked four year old Emma and Dave, an adult with disabilities in a wheelchair, to serve as greeters. Dave couldn't speak, but with little Emma's help they were a team.

When the school children arrived and saw Dave they stopped in the doorway wide-eyed and unable to move. Seeing the problem, little Emma took Dave's hand and said: "It's okay, he's my friend." Following hat, the children stepped forward one by one to say hello and proceed into the center.
