A pastoral counselor is trained in psychology and theology. Thus both psychological and spiritual issues can be addressed. Pastoral counseling is a consideration if you are experiencing emotional difficulties and wish to address them in a spiritual context. Pastoral counselors are not medical doctors and may not prescribe medication. In situations where a pastoral counselor believes medication can be helpful, the client will be referred to a psychiatrist, a medical doctor, who specializes in treating mental, emotional and behavioral disorders. Usually, therapy will continue with the pastoral counselor. The psychiatrist will supervise the client's medication.
